  • I think there needs to be a distinction between the arguments for and against Israel's continued existence, and the debate assuming but not conceding that they should be allowed to exist but that the Israeli government must rethink its policies.

  • I think the numerous citations prove how great Jared Diamond's books are, so I'll add one more vote to the list. By the way, the two recommended above have become required reading for the Sociology of Development class in our national university (both undergraduate and masters).

  • I love Terry Pratchett, so I second that nomination. Another great guy is David Sedaris - try his "Me Talk Pretty One Day", a collection of short essays, for when you need a quick boost of funny.

  • The argument on this page is probably a microcosm of what's raged since ye olde philosophers were around. Do we strive for the "Good Life", or do we try to protect ourselves as best we can from the dangers that surround society? In this case, however, they may not be irreconciliable.
